Referral service, not a contractor. SF Drain & Sewer Pros does not perform plumbing, drain, or sewer work. Calls to (415) 555-0100 are connected to an independent, licensed local provider, who may pay us for the referral. Always confirm the provider's license and get a written estimate. How this works
Who is responsible for the sewer lateral in San Francisco?
The side sewer (or lateral) is the pipe that carries wastewater from your building to the public sewer main, usually under the street. In San Francisco, property owners are generally responsible for maintaining and repairing their side sewer, often including the portion under the sidewalk and street, while the city maintains the main. Responsibility details can depend on the location of the defect and current city rules, so confirm with SF Public Works / the SF Public Utilities Commission before you assume who pays.
Why it matters
- Root intrusion from street trees often happens in the portion near the sidewalk.
- A problem in the city main can cause backups in several neighbouring buildings at once. If neighbours are affected too, contact the city (311) as well as a plumber.
Practical steps
- Have the line camera-inspected and ask the technician to locate the defect relative to the property line.
- If the defect appears to be in the public main, report it to the city via SF311.
- Check whether your homeowners policy offers service-line coverage (many don't by default).
